A new species of Ereymatermes Constantino (Isoptera, Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae) from the northeastern Atlantic Forest, Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)

Ereymatermes Constantino is a nasute genus endemic to the Neotropical region, which included Ereymatermes rotundiceps Constantino from the forest of the lower Japurá River, AM, Brazil, and E. panamensis Roisin from the Panama Canal area. Herein Ereymatermes piquira, a new species from the northeastern Atlantic Forest, is described and illustrated based on the soldier and worker castes. The meaning of the two types of workers ("worker with broad gap" and "worker with narrow gap") and its relation to feeding habits are discussed.

Bird-termite interactions in Brazil: A review with perspectives for future studies Biota Neotropica

We present a review on the principal interactions between birds and termites in Brazil. We found 218 bird species feeding on termites or using termitaria for nesting or perching. Termites were mentioned as food source for 179 bird species. Alates were the most consumed caste. Termitaria were mentioned as nest site for 45 bird species. Some bird species also perch on the top of termite mounds to search for their prey or to conduct territorial and/or courtship displays. Considering all interactions between both animal groups, little is known about the identification of termite genera or species. Therefore, we suggest more detailed studies to be conducted on the natural history and ecology of interactions between birds and termites in Brazil.

Atualmente, no Acre, o preço das estacas tratadas de eucalipto para cercados é bastante competitivo como das estacas de espécies nativas tradicionalmente utilizadas em contato com o solo, mesmo considerando os custos do tratamento preservativo e do transporte do centro-sul do país, pois não há no estado plantios dessa espécie e tampouco unidades industriais (usinas) de preservação. Eficiência do fipronil no controle do cupim de montículo, Nasutitermes sp. (Isoptera: Termitidae) em cana-de-açúcar Anais da SEB

The efficiency of fipronil was evaluated in field conditions at different dosages and two formulations, against Nasutitermes sp. (isopteran: Termitidae) in sugarcane (Sccharum sp.). Termite mounds were indentified, measured and drilled until cellulosic chamber to allow insecticide application. Nine treatments were tested with ten replications in a completely randomized design and each termite mound considered as an experimental unit. after 50 days the termite mounds were opened and the mortality evaluated. The most efficient treatments were fipronil (800 WG) at 0.32 g a.i./mound and fipronil (20) at 0.20 g a.i./mound, both causing 100% mortality.

First description of the worker of Planicapritermes longilabrum with notes on the nest of Planicapritermes planiceps (Blattaria: Isoptera: Termitidae) Acta Amazonica

ABSTRACT Planicapritermes Emerson, 1949 is a South American termite genus with two nominal species: Planicapritermes planiceps (Emerson, 1925) and Planicapritermes longilabrum Constantino, 1998. The soldiers of this genus are characterized by strongly asymmetrical mandibles. Planicapritermes planiceps was described from soldiers and workers, and P. longilabrum only from soldiers. Here we describe and illustrate workers of P. longilabrum based on specimens collected in Rondônia state, Brazil. We also present a comparison between workers and soldiers of P. planiceps and P. longilabrum, and describe the nest of P. planiceps.

Formigas (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) Associadas a Ninhos de Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar) (Isoptera, Termitidae) no Cerrado do Planalto Central do Brasil Ciências Agrárias

Resumo. Com o objetivo de conhecer a fauna de formigas que coabita os cupinzeiros de Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar) no Cerrado sensu stricto do Brasil Central, foram realizadas coletas em 36 cupinzeiros em três localidades. Os cupinzeiros foram fragmentados e o material coletado foi armazenado em frascos com álcool a 80%. Apresentamos aqui uma lista das formigas associadas aos cupinzeiros de C. cumulans. Um total de 61 espécies distribuídas em nove subfamílias e 32 gêneros foi coletado. A subfamília Myrmicinae apresentou o maior número de gêneros (15) e de espécies (22). O presente trabalho foi conduzido visando comparar a diversidade e composição de insetos em áreas de floresta contínua, fragmentada, floresta secundária e pastagem no sudeste acreano. Coletas mensais de insetos foram realizadas com armadilha luminosa e rede entomológica, entre abril de 1999 e março de 2000, no interior de um fragmento florestal e em uma área de floresta secundária e pastagem adjacentes ao fragmento, no município de Rio Branco, AC. Também foram realizadas amostragens mensais de cupins com iscas de papelão, em todas as áreas citadas e em uma outra área de floresta contínua, localizada no município de Capixaba, AC. The collection of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (MPEG), in the city of Belém, State of Pará, Brazil, has 65 samples of type-specimens of Isoptera, representing 26 species (21 holotypes and 5 paratypes) of 18 genera. This paper lists the number of specimens of each caste in each type series, type localities with geographical coordinates, collectors, and dates of collection.

Nest plasticity of Cornitermes silvestrii (Isoptera, Termitidae, Syntermitinae) in response to flood pulse in the Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The Pantanal is one of the largest wetlands in the world. Since many areas in Pantanal are flooded during part of the year, it is expected that plants and animals would have mechanisms for their survival during the flooded period. This study investigated the existence of differences in nest shape and inquilines of Cornitermes silvestrii in areas influenced by the flood pulse. Centris (Ptilotopus) are large bees and important pollinators in the Neotropical region. Its biology and behavior is still poorly known and only a few observations have been published. In this paper, observations on the biology of C. (Ptilotopus) scopipes Friese, 1899, a species that occurs in the "cerrados" of Brazil, are presented. The study was conducted in the Estação Ecológica de Jataí, in Luiz Antônio, São Paulo, during the active period of the adults (November through April). Females collected pollen from flowers of Solanaceae and Caesalpiniaceae, by vibration, and floral oils from Malpighiaceae belonging to the genera Byrsonima, Banisteriopsis, Stigmaphyllon and Peixotoa. Nutritional preferences of wood-feeding termites inhabiting floodplain forests of the Amazon River, Brazil Acta Amazonica

The alimentary preferences of five species of wood-feeding termites of the genus Nasutitermes that coexist in the inundated forests of the floodplains of the Amazon river várzea for species of fresh wood and for wood in different stages of decomposition was evaluated in laboratory tests. Wood of low density was generally preferred; the decay stages were preferred over fresh wood. The five termite species differ in the amplitude of their choices, indicating a strong differentiation in food choice among them. Differences in feeding preferences may be a niche-separating factor for these five Nasutitermes species of the floodplains.

Epigeous termite mounds are frequently observed in pasture areas, but the processes regulating their population dynamics are poorly known. This study evaluated epigeous termite mounds in cultivated grasslands used as pastures, assessing their spatial distribution by means of geostatistics and evaluating their vitality. The study was conducted in the Cerrado biome in the municipality of Rio Brilhante, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.
